I had a lot of ideas for my newsletter post this week, and they all went out the window when I saw the viral video of Katelyn Ohashi of UCLA Athletics performing her perfect 10 floor routine in a recent college meet.
I watched it several times, admiring her supernatural skill, calm poise, radiant smile, flexible body, playful presence, the way she is simultaneously in the routine and totally connected to the space, the audience, and her fellow gymnasts on the sidelines, and all of it flowing from an "I got this!" state of confidence and flowing ki.
The Joy of Peak Performance
I teared up with the beauty of it all, the joy. She was there with us and for us, loving every ki moment. Whatever else might be going on in her life, she gave us the power of her presence. Thank you, Katelyn.
I'm sure there are about a gazillion posts out there about Katelyn, and you've probably watched the video as many time as I have by now. I just wanted to give you two more minutes of it.
Watch it again. Find the ki moments in your day, your life, your family, your workplace. I'm not a gymnast, but I am a wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and niece. I can find that joyful presence swimming at the pool, practicing aikido, singing with my sisters, helping my mom into her coat, shoveling snow with my husband, or trying out a new recipe.
Katelyn's peak performance lets us glimpse what's possible every day. Her performance shouted to me: "You can do this. We all have the capacity for this kind of joy." She had to practice hard to attain that level of skill, for sure, and there's more than skill in this video.
We can practice, too. As Thich Nhat Hanh writes in his new book How to Fight, we can feed our love or feed our suffering. So go ahead. Be joyful. Just decide to be. And find the people, places, and performances that feed you.
